The Council of Tampere Region


The Council of Tampere Region is one of Finland's 19 regional councils. It is a joint municipal authority maintained by 24 municipalities, and has 470 000 inhabitants within its area.

The activities of the Council are based on the legislation on municipalities, which defines the administrative structures, operation legality and forms of decision-making.

The Council operates as regional development and regional planning authority according to the principles of local self-government. The Council of Tampere Region sets out to strengthen the competitive potential of its region both nationally and internationally.

On the basis of municipal democracy it articulates common regional needs and work to promote the material and cultural well-being of the region. The delegates on the decision-making bodies of the Council are influential political appointees of the member municipalities. They represent the political will of the inhabitants of the region according to the results of local elections.
